Jottings from Dixie: The Civil War Dispatches of Sergeant Major Stephen F. Fleharty, U.S.A.

Authors: S. F. Fleharty, Philip J. Reyburn, and Terry L. Wilson

Good old great-great-grand-uncle Stephen's Civil War musings
Stephen was my 2nd Great-grand-uncle. His brother William, my 2nd great-grandfather also served in the Civil War despite his brother's prostestations. I William's guard detail book from 1864. This is an interesting compilation of Stephen's writings from the Civil War.

Wonderful, New Addition to Civil War Studies!!
"Jottings" is a wonderful, welcome addition to Civil War studies. This collection of newspaper columns by Sergeant Major Fleharty gives a vivid account of the 102nd Regiment Illinois Infantry during the American Civil War. The introduction written by the two editors provides a splendid biographical account of Fleharty. This book is well worth purchasing for any student of our Civil War but especially for those interested in Illinois' role in the war.

Kentucky Cavaliers in Dixie Reminiscences of a Confederate Cavalryman
Published in Hardcover by Broadfoot Pub Co (June, 1991)
Author: Mosgrove
Average review score:

Kentucky Cavaliers in Dixie
This work is more of spin off work from the Diary of Edward O. Guerrant who served with this book's author during the Civil War. Musgrove supplements Guerrant's Diary which has been recently publlshed under the title "Bluegrass Confederate" Edited by William C. Davis. Both works fill in the gaps about the actions that were fought in Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee where the Official Records are silent. Aside from a few local histories this book is one of the few that has such information. Highly recommended for students of this area of the conflict.

Excellent KY Resource
I recently finished reading this book and found it to be one of the most interesting unit histories that I have ever read. This book is a history of the 4th Kentucky Cavalry (CSA) and is written by one of its members, George Dallas Mosgrove. It recounts the service of this unit in Eastern Kentucky and Southwest Virginia and under the command of Generals Humphrey Marshall, John Hunt Morgan, "Grumble" Jones, and others. It also provides a roster of members of the 4th and biographies of the Captains. The "classical" writing style of the author is evident throughout the book, yet it always keeps your attention and is easy to read. For those who have an interest in Kentucky units or the war in Southwest Virginia, this book is for you.

Let the Band Play Dixie

YeeeeeHaaaaaa!
I had just finished "Last Full Measure" when I started this book. It was a wonderful, imaginative work that kept me wondering just what the bag limits would be on major issues addressed and historic military, sports and political figures brought into the picture along with the fictitious "father" of sports agents. Hilarious combinations of characters, circumstances and events left me shaking my head in amazement, while I still was made to focus on the real, not- so-funny issues that challenged our society and country in 1896 and still challenge us today. The image of Gens. Longstreet and Sickles laying out a football field on the Gettysburg battlefield is one not easily purged from my mind, sort of like the rest of the book, a combination of the absolutely unthinkable and the "Why not?".

Terrific Fun, pokes fun at everything
What a fun ride through the turn of the century attitudes toward sex roles, race, athletics, and social class. I loved every minute of it. After having read a lot of serious history of the Civil War, I found this to be a welcome change.

Moving Forward With Literature Circles: How to Plan, Manage, and Evaluate Literature Circles That Deepen Understanding and Foster a Love of Reading
Published in Paperback by Scholastic Professional Books (January, 2002)
Authors: Jeni Pollack Day, Dixie Lee Spiegel, Janet McLellan, and Valerie B. Brown

Very Helpful
This is a great book for those who are beginning to experiment with literature circles in the classroom. From start to finish this book gives ideal situations, practices and real examples. It also recognizes that literature circles often have many problems and frustrations and walks the reader through scenarios step by step. There are mini strategy lessons as well as reproducibles that are very helpful. I love this book and have already recommended it to many of my colleagues.

Very helpful, says my daughters teacher
First, I am one the authors' sisters. That said, these are the comments made by my daughter's teacher after getting this book as a gift.

"Where did you find out about this book? It is great, I love it."

I got to read bits of it as it was being written, and have since read the whole thing. It is helpful in assisting students to read to comprehend books, rather than just reading to write a book report or fill in the blank type tests.

Teach Yourself French Language, Life, & Culture (Teach Yourself)
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (December, 2000)
Author: Celia Dixie
Average review score:

Nice introduction to France
Seldom can I walk into a bookstore and find just the book I am looking for when I don't have a title in mind to ask for. However, this book was it. I didn't want a language course and I didn't want a travel guide, nor did I want a book about Napoleon or recent French politics. Staff always seem confused when you say 'no' to the above. I found the book almost by accident. I read it from cover to cover as if it were a novel. It is an excellent blend of facts, anecdotes, humour, language and reference information. Celia Dixie has done well with this most excellent introduction to France. One point about domestic tasks, pages 240-241: do French women help with maintaining the car? fixing the roof? cleaning the gutters? mowing the lawn? removing the burglars? etc

The people, places and things behind the news...
While no one volume can encapsulate the culture of any nation, Celia Dixie's work will go a long way towards explaining the signifigance and meaning of the people, places and things which are constantly referred to in French news reports. If you like to read and/or listen to the wide array of French news available on the net, this volume is invaluable.

To Live & Die in Dixie
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (July, 1993)
Author: Kathy Hogan Trocheck
Average review score:

Tight plotting - generally a good read
Try this author. She does not have the high public profile of some other female authors but she stands up there with the Graftons and Paretskys. This author has a lovely writing style and has created warm, believable characters. The mystery is compelling but I found myself wanting and enjoying more the dialogue and interaction between the characters.

Another Reader Hooked !
This was my first read by Kathy and I will be back for more ! I really liked her style and the way your in suspense till the end .I thought Callahan was very beliveable and really liked her. I will be reading alot more of Kathys work. Lisa Miller

A War in Dixie : Alabama v. Auburn
Published in Paperback by Perennial Press (17 September, 2002)
Authors: Ivan Maisel and Kelly Whiteside
Average review score:

Great Inside Look
What a great idea-- go inside both teams as they prepare for the greatest college football rivilary in the nation-- Auburn v. Alabama (or Alabama v. Auburn, whichever you prefer). It offers great insight of the workings of the coaching staffs as they get ready for the big game.

Roll Tide! and, well ok... war eagle.
Finally, a well-written book about the only college football rivalry that really matters. Other books have tried to capture the intensity of this series. But this one, with excellent material from folks like Howell Raines, tops them all. If you've ever tried, vainly, to explain what this game really means to someone not washed in Alabama-Auburn lore, then you know how difficult it is to do what these authors have done. An excellent book. Well done.
